Product details
The Tombow ABT has earned its reputation by doing one thing exceptionally well: making brush lettering and illustration feel approachable. It isn't the most durable brush pen nor the cheapest, but its balanced brush tip, dependable ink and creative versatility continue to make it one of the easiest recommendations for both beginners and experienced artists.
The clever part of the Tombow ABT isn't its dual-tip design, plenty of markers offer that. Its real strength is the brush tip itself. It strikes an unusually well-judged balance between firmness and flexibility, giving beginners enough control to build confidence while still allowing experienced artists to produce expressive lettering and fluid brush strokes. That balance is a large part of why the ABT has remained a benchmark long after newer competitors arrived. Its versatility extends well beyond lettering. The water-based ink blends beautifully, lifts with water and can even be used like traditional watercolour, making the marker equally comfortable in sketchbooks, journals and illustration work. The fine bullet tip is more useful than it first appears, handling outlines, notes and smaller details without reaching for another pen. Where the ABT shows its limitations is exactly where you'd expect a water-based brush pen to. Large areas can develop visible streaking, the brush tip gradually softens with heavy use, and the ink isn't waterproof, limiting its role in mixed media work. Despite growing competition from more affordable brands, the ABT continues to justify its reputation through consistency rather than novelty. It isn't simply a popular brush pen it's one that many artists continue reaching for long after the excitement of buying it has faded, and that says more about its quality than any colour chart ever could.
